Personal Projects

Personal projects serve to satisfy my desire to create for myself. They help me explore new fields, refine my craft, and meet wonderful people.

Her Helm is a portrait project to celebrate women who are boat captains. These women love being outside. The sun and the sea call to them. They are forging their way in a culture not historically meant for them. Being in charge of their vessel is freedom to them. This project honors these women in boating who inspire us to feel the water and reach for the stars.

I recreated the four seasons in portrait form. One session for each season, I brought in a team to set the scene and represent a person as one of the annual phases - Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn.

In December 2019 I decided that my 2020 project would be of weekly self portraits. I enjoy portraits, I want to create them more often, and I am the person most accessible to myself. I also wanted to relate to my clients in front of the lens more. So I made an intentional goal of every week, shaping the light and posing my body and pressing the remote shutter. This choice worked well for me during the coronavirus stay-at-home orders, when I was nearly the *only* person accessible to myself. It's a great exercise, seeing oneself through the camera lens.
